biography
Class description: Explore the Japanese comic art form
known as manga. This will be a hands-on experience with an emphasis
on the formal elements of comic illustration, including figure drawing,
composition, character design and anatomy. Students will work extensively
from the human figure as a means of understanding the foundation
of effective comic illustration, and will keep a sketchbook for
the development of their studies. This course will also address
the cultural and conceptual basis of various comic traditions, with
time given to lecture and discussions of subjects directly related
to the history, techniques, presentation and content of comic artwork.
Class participation in discussion is strongly encouraged.
Needed materials:
Drawing Materials:
Sketchbook, 8"x 6" or larger
Drawing paper, 18" x 24" Drawing pencils. If possible, an inexpensive lead-holder
and lead.
Pens, Black ink, Fine and Bold point.
Black ink and brush, or other means of inking solid areas.
Colour Markers, any variety
Newsprint paper (18"x 24" or larger) and drawing
charcoal
